Are There Any Ships In Port Today?

One of the things to keep in mind when traveling to a port city is the arrival of cruise ships. Why, do you ask? Let’s just imagine that we are staying the week or two in a small port city and a large ship with 2,000 to 4,000 people arrive in port on a cruise ship. How easy will it be to book an appointment for a local attraction or tour? Let’s say that you were planning to do some zip-lining. They pick people up at their hotels or condos and drive you to their place of business. They can handle 20-30 people in one group. Maybe they can even handle a few groups during the day. If there is a cruise ship or two in port, they may have completely booked up every slot at the zip-lining venue.

They may have also booked up most lunch spots in town as well.

So, to plan for this issue, you are probably wondering how to find out which ships are in port during your vacation. There are several options to do this search. Keep in mind that these sites will provide the info, but wow, there are a lot of advertisements on these websites.

I always do this before I leave home, if we are staying in a cruise port, so that I can plan my excursions ahead of time. In fact, the days that the ships are in port may just be my days for staying at the resort and enjoying their amenities, or even jump in the rental car and visit some place distant to the port.

For example, with Cabo San Lucas, you know when to stay in the resort and when to take a walk to downtown Cabo. When the restaurants will be over crowded by the people from the ships and when you will have downtown all to your self, and of course the other folks staying in the local hotels and condos.

Currently we are looking at what to do in Christchurch, New Zealand on our upcoming trip this fall. As we looked at the options for that town, I was reading the reviews for their Hop On – Hop Off Tram. Wow, a tram instead of a bus. It looked promising but most of the complants were that the seats were small and they were very crowded and they had to wait for 4 or 5 trams before they could board because a ship was in port and there was an extera 3,000 people in town. So, of course, I checked for ships in the port and the only one is a Princes Cruise Ship that will be in port 4 days before we arrive. That means that they will be gone by the time we want to see the sights from the tram.

With this in mind, we are also visiting Fiji. We will be near the airport. If I look up the main cruise port in Fiji, I find Port Denarau which is just a few miles from where we are staying. I have attached the Google Map to the name of the port for your viewing pleasure. I looked it up and we are in luck. No cruise ships scheduled during our visit.
